Vegetated Buffers
A vegetated buffer is a nature-based edge-of-field drainage practice that serves as a transition area between the field and waterway.
The three zones of a vegetated buffer include trees, shrubs, and grasses/forbs.

How It Works
When runoff water leaves the field, the vegetated buffer holds on to the pollutants and converts them to less dangerous matter, which is released or stored as biomass. The vegetated buffer also slows the water down to help reduce erosion.
Benefits
- Can remove 25-100% of nitrate load
- Water storage
- Carbon sequestration
- Low maintenance
- Good for wildlife and pollinators
