Two-Stage Ditches
A two-stage ditch can be natural or constructed in a conventional ditch with the addition of a grass floodplain bench.
Perforated tile lines release water from the field through inlets in the side of the two-stage ditch, making it more stable than a typical ditch.

How It Works
When water enters the two-stage ditch, the grass benches create floodplain zones for the channel to spread out flood waters while providing plant life and microbes needed to denitrify the water. The deep roots of the vegetation on the benches help stave off erosion and strengthen the soil.
Benefits
- Reduces nitrogen runoff by up to 20%
- Water storage
- Low maintenance
- Good for wildlife
