Smart Wetlands

A Smart Wetland (or constructed wetland) is a strategically placed wetland featuring vegetation and bacteria that collects and helps filter tile-drained water before it reaches the water supply.

How It Works

The Smart Wetland catches tile-drained runoff and water, slowing it down and letting nature do the work to take out nutrients through denitrification. Wetland plants provide the carbon that bacteria need to denitrify the water before it gets in the water supply.

Benefits

  • Can remove 40-70% of nitrate load
  • Lasts 30+ years
  • Low maintenance
  • Reduces flood damage
  • Good for wildlife and pollinators
