Saturated Buffer Strips

A saturated buffer strip is an edge-of-field drainage practice that is made up of a non-perforated drain pipe, a water control structure, a distribution pipe, and a vegetated buffer.

The saturated buffer strip needs at least 1.2% of soil organic matter to best work with the tile drainage system.

How It Works

Tile-drained water goes to the control structure and diverts water to the perforated pipe. As it crosses the vegetated buffer, nitrates are removed through denitrification and plant uptake in the buffer.

Benefits

  • Can remove 40-60% of nitrate load
  • Takes up little production land
  • Low maintenance
  • Good for wildlife and pollinators
